Babil is small, independent, and run on the belief that a social network can be a useful, respectful place. These Guidelines say what we expect from everyone using the service. They are part of the Terms of Service: breaking them can get your content removed or your account suspended.
The short version
Don't be cruel. Don't post content that would get us in trouble with the law. Treat other people the way you want the algorithm to treat you.
Things that are always off-limits
Illegal content
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Any such content is reported to the competent authorities.
- Terrorist or violent-extremist content, calls to commit terrorist acts, or glorification of them.
- Content promoting human trafficking, sexual exploitation, or non-consensual intimate imagery.
- Content that infringes someone else's intellectual property.
- Anything otherwise illegal in the jurisdiction where Babil is operated.
Harassment and hate
- Targeted harassment, stalking, or threats against an individual or a group.
- Hate speech โ attacks on people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or serious disease.
- Incitement to violence, self-harm or suicide.
- Doxxing: publishing private information about someone without their consent.
Deception and manipulation
- Impersonating another real person or organisation in a way designed to mislead.
- Coordinated inauthentic behaviour: running multiple accounts, bots, or networks to distort conversation.
- Knowingly posting false information that could cause real-world harm (for example: dangerous medical misinformation, forged evidence in a public dispute).
- Deepfakes or synthetic media passed off as real when they are not.
Abuse of the platform
- Spam, bulk unsolicited messages, or automated posting.
- Scraping, mass data collection, or abuse of the API beyond documented rate limits.
- Attempts to hack, disable or overload the service, or to circumvent safety features (including the daily interaction limits and the transparency controls).
- Distributing malware, phishing links or obvious scams.
Things we ask you to be thoughtful about
Sensitive content
Sexually explicit content, graphic violence and content about self-harm are not welcome on Babil for now. As the platform grows and we can invest in proper content warnings and age-gating, this policy may be revisited โ any change will be announced here first.
Political speech
Political debate is welcome. Calls to violence, dehumanising rhetoric, or content that crosses into the categories above are not. We are not in the business of judging political positions; we are in the business of enforcing the rules that apply to everyone.
Your reach is not your right
Babil's transparent algorithm is designed to surface interesting content โ not to maximise your follower count or guarantee you a spot at the top of anyone's feed. Trying to game the algorithm (coordinated reaction farms, engagement baiting, reaction inflation) is a form of manipulation and will be treated as such.
How we enforce this
When we or a user flag content we look at it in context. Depending on severity we may: remove the content, require an edit, limit its distribution, warn the account, temporarily suspend the account, or, for serious or repeated violations, terminate it. For illegal content we also preserve evidence and notify competent authorities as required.
You will be told when an action is taken against your content and, where feasible, offered a chance to appeal through the contact address in the Imprint.
Reporting
To report content or an account that breaks these Guidelines, use the Report action in the post menu or write to the contact address in the Imprint. Please include links, user handles and, where relevant, a short explanation โ the more specific the report, the faster we can act on it.
Changes
These Guidelines evolve. We will keep the "Last updated" date above current and, where a change meaningfully broadens what is prohibited, announce it in-app.
